Understanding Autism – Level 3 Certificate
Our Level 3 Certificate – Understanding Autism course will give you an in-depth knowledge and understanding of autism. This qualification can help you to progress your career in the health and social care or education sector; support a family member, friend or colleague with autism; or increase yours or your staffs’ knowledge and help raise awareness of autism.
Unit 1: Autism in context
In this unit, cover the historical context of autism, the diagnosis and characteristics of autism, the legislative framework applicable to autism, and how autism is represented in society.
Unit 2: Positive behavioural support for individuals with autism
This unit covers behaviour within the context of autism and how to promote an autism-friendly environment. Learn about how to promote individual positive behavioural support and the interventions that are used in behavioural support.
Unit 3: Understand support and management of transitions for individuals with autism
In this unit, learn about how transitions can affect people with autism, how to support young people with autism to make the transition into adulthood, and how to support individuals with autism into employment.
Unit 4: Therapeutic interventions and support available for individuals with autism and co-occurring conditions
This unit covers the range of therapeutic interventions available to individuals with autism. Learn about the services available to individuals with autism and their families, and co-occurring conditions and their treatments.
Unit 5: Communication and social interaction with individuals with autism
In this unit, learn about the differences in social interactions and communications associated with autism, how communication can be adapted to support positive interactions and communication with individuals with autism, and a range of strategies and aids used to support communication and social interaction for individuals with autism.
Unit 6: Safeguarding and resilience in autism
In the final unit of this course, learn how to raise concerns about potential or actual harm, abuse or exploitation, how to support the health, safety and well-being of individuals, how the legislative framework safeguards children, young people and adults with autism, and about how and when restrictive practices might be used within legal guidelines.

Distance Online Learning
Study independently at home and at your own pace and get a new qualification. You will complete an online workbook in stages and get feedback from your tutor as you progress. These short courses are a perfect way to learn whilst looking for work or to fit around your other commitments.
They run on a rolling programme over 12 weeks with start dates every few months. There will be a charge of £100 for those who don’t complete their course to cover learning materials and registration.
Before you start your course you will complete a short English assessment and attend an online induction meeting.

Do I need any qualifications to start this course?
No, you do not need any previous qualifications to be accepted onto the course. However we will ask you to complete a short English and maths assessment before the course starts. This is so we can be sure that the course is at the right level for you and we can support you to achieve your qualification. How much does the course cost?
You must be aged 19+ years old from 1/8/2023 and meet UK/EU residency requirements.
Level 3 courses are free for learners who do not already hold a full Level 3 qualification (e.g. four AS Levels or two A Levels etc), are aged 19+ years and earn below the annual National Living wage (£18,525).
If Buckinghamshire Adult Learning are not able to obtain government funding for this reason, then learners will be expected to pay a course fee of £811.
When does the course start?
Induction sessions are set up throughout the year. Register with us ASAP so we can give you more information.
How long is the course and how long will it take me to complete it?
You need to plan your learning to complete the work within 12 weeks. There will be a charge of £100 for those who don’t complete their course to cover learning materials and registration.
You will complete an online workbook which includes short assignments that you must submit to your tutor every two weeks. Your tutor will mark your work and give feedback online so that you know how much progress you are making.
What support will I get during my course?
You will work independently at your own pace to meet the deadlines set by your tutor. It is important that you meet the deadlines for assignments so that you complete the course within 12 weeks.
Your tutor is available to offer support by telephone, email or video calls as appropriate, so please don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like to have a chat about anything you are finding difficult.
How will my work be assessed?
Your tutor will mark your assignments and tell you if you have passed each section of the workbook or whether you need to revisit any questions. As part of our quality management process, at the end of your course your tutor’s assessments are moderated by another assessor and you will be informed if you have passed your qualification or whether you need to re-do any work. There are no exams.
What qualification will I achieve?
This Level 3 course is accredited by NCFE, a nationally recognised Awarding body, who will issue the certificate to you.
