Adult learners aged between 21 and 67 years old studying with Buckinghamshire Adult Learning were celebrating last week after receiving some fantastic results in the new maths and English GCSE exams. The reformed exams are graded 9 to 1, with 9 being the highest and grade 4 a standard pass. 68% of the learners achieved 9-4 grades in English language and 66% achieved 9-4 grades in maths.
One learner, Mariam Ali, aged 42 from High Wycombe, achieved a 9 in maths and an 8 in English language. Mariam, originally from the Lebanon, volunteers to help others on ESOL classes (English for speakers of other languages) with Buckinghamshire Adult Learning. She has studied a number of other courses, including creative writing and French before deciding to study English and maths GCSE to further her career opportunities. Mariam is now studying for the Award in Education and Training with the aim to become a tutor.
Mike Appleyard, Buckinghamshire County Council Cabinet Member for Education and Skills said of their achievements: “These results are a fantastic achievement for all adult learners who are often juggling other demands of work and family life. Many of them left school without any qualifications and these results will give them another opportunity to fulfil their potential and maybe find a new career. I congratulate them on their achievements and to the tutors, learning support assistants and volunteers for the dedication and support they’ve given to enable the learners to succeed”.
